The Great Skate 2019

Kia ora!

What a great October we had here at Zeal Taranaki! We were out and about in our local community at our events and creating spaces for young people to gather. Here’s what we got up to.

The Great Skate

Earlier in the month, we ran The Great Skate, a skate competition at East End for 8-24 year olds. We had a huge turnout with more than 300 people showing up and 45 entrants in three categories – Beginners (less than 2 years of experience), Intermediates (2-5 years of experience), and Advanced (5+ years of experience).

Three competitors from each category went to the final which was won by Sienna Toghill (beginner), Noah Forrest (intermediate) and Jackson Wilcox (advanced). Live acts performed throughout the day, Amore Coffee kept caffeine levels up, and electoral officers helped people register and cast their votes in the local elections.

Games Night at Puke Ariki

On the same day, the Puke Ariki Creative Arts and Events Planning Team ran their first event in the Discover It! space. The night included Playstation competitions, virtual reality experiences, board games, and of course, great food. Everyone had a fun night!

Trades Apprenticeship Challenge

Four local businesses sponsored a group of our young people to take part in the Trades Apprenticeship Challenge at WITT. The group completed a range of challenges including assembling scaffolding and First Aid. We are so grateful for the businesses who generously sponsored this experience.

Afternoon Jamz

This open mic afternoon had to be one of our most favourite events of the year so far! We had such a wide range of performers including a heavy metal band, a Michael Jackson impersonator, acoustic guitarists, R&B singers and a number of rappers.

So many people wanted to perform that we even ran out of time! (We’ll just have to organise another one)! The audience were so supportive of every act and enjoyed the barista coffee and fresh cake that was available.

Coming up – New Plymouth Christmas Parade

On 30 November, we’re going to have our trailer stage set up at the New Plymouth Christmas Parade, featuring some of our dedicated and talented performers showing off their talent and hard work. See you there!
