A 90s Block Party in Wellington

Kia ora!

It’s been another amazing month here at Zeal Wellington as we continue to deliver high quality youth work to the rangatahi in our region.

This month, we have been busy meeting new young people, launching our summer programme for afternoon hangs, helping young people deliver high quality events, as well as supporting young people as they transition into exam season. It’s been a busy month, and a great one!

A 90s Block Party

At the start of the month, we brought back the good ol’ days and hosted a 90s Block Party for young people aged 13-18. We had a live DJ, an awesome Wellington City Council venue and of course, lots of throwback outfits and music. Everyone had so much fun and so many laughs!

We loved that the party created a safe environment for our young people to have a great time and connect with other young people looking for a community to be part of.

Congratulations, barista students

In mid-October, our last intake of barista students completed their course with us. It was awesome getting to know them, hearing their stories and watching them develop over the time of the course.

We know that youth unemployment is of great concern to a lot of rangatahi we’re connected with. This programme is specifically designed to help break this cycle and equip young people with the skills they need to be able to enter the workforce. Three young people from this intake have already secured jobs as baristas and we’re supporting other students to do the same as school comes to a close for the year. We’re so proud of them!

Summer afternoon hangs – it’s all on

Summer afternoon hangs have officially kicked off for the year and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Afternoon hangs are the heartbeat of Zeal Wellington. These spaces are where the magic happens and genuine relationships between young people, their peers and our youth workers are built.

Over the last few weeks in particular we have met so many new young people who are looking for a place of belonging, safety and care as they navigate some pretty big challenges. It’s such an honour for our team to journey with young people through these tough moments.

Now that summer is looming we have been taking afternoon hangs out of the building and enjoying the sun when we can.
