Great potential in Zeal Hamilton’s new MATES partnership

UPDATE: After a massive response, all of our mentor positions have been filled. Thanks for your interest everyone!

The amazing folk at the Great Potentials Foundation are teaming up with the Zeal Hams crew in 2017 to bring the MATES programme to Hamilton.

MATES, an initiative that was started in Auckland, is an in-schools mentor and training programme that addresses underachievement in young people in lower socio-economic areas.

“Our aim with this programme is to enable young people to believe in their abilities and capacities as learners,” says Lehi Duncan, Zeal Hamilton’s Regional Manager.

“Our relationship-based approach at Zeal, coupled with the training MATES provides, will help us draw out young people’s abilities and strengths and empower them to reach their full potential.”

Through the programme, young people from lower-decile high schools will be partnered with university students who will help them create a path into tertiary education. Newest Hamilton staff member Hayley Davies will be heading up the MATES initiative in Hamilton.

“I think this is an awesome opportunity to invest in our community,” says Hayley. “We need to better identify and address the barriers a large proportion of our community face in accessing higher education, training, and future employment after school. This is a part of that.”

Through this partnership, Zeal can provide even more outlets for Hamilton’s youth to express themselves.
