Hawke’s Bay thinks outside the box for design classes

The Zeal Hawke’s bay crew are looking to activate their latest dream, the Design Box – and we need your help
The Design Box will be a fully kitted out creative hub, tentatively planned for the Taradale area of Hawke’s Bay. “One-third of Napier young people reside in the Taradale / Greenmeadows area,” says Mark Wilson, Zeal HB’s general manager. “In this location, we can make sure the Design Box reaches those youth that would benefit the most.”

Focussing on offering pathways to employment in ‘new tech’ areas (including graphic design, web design and photography), the Design Box would serve as a design hub for young creatives, teaching them skills for future work.

An experienced Zeal staff member will coordinate the Design Box, acting as a social impact broker between youth, industry and partnering individuals and groups. Youth will be taught industry skills and gain valuable work experience. The Design Box will also be a fully functional social enterprise, offering clients advertising and comms advice from the young people that have been trained through the project.

The unit will contain three high-end design computers and will be fitted out with ultra-fast broadband. It will also be equipped with a fold up/down table, hosting creative classes by day and mini exhibitions by night.

Zeal expects this unit to train 30 young people per year in graphic design. We are currently looking for people to help us out with funds to make our dream a reality – check out our page on Givealittle to donate, or get in contact with Mark Wilson.
