West Auckland youth connect with creative side at exhibition

After three months exploring and honing their creative passions, nine students from Zeal West’s photography and art pathways displayed their work in our first exhibition for 2017.

Here at Zeal, we are passionate about journeying alongside young people and exploring their potential through creativity. At the end of every Pathway we run, the students’ display their creations – whether song, dance, drama, art, or photography – in a showcase or exhibition, celebrating their achievements with their family and peers.

The Connect Exhibition showcases work from our Term 1 art and photography students. Over the course of the two-hour opening night, over 50 punters came through to see photography displayed alongside the recently completed mural. Two painting students, seven photographers and one young musician filled the space with their art.

“The students get one-on-one tuition and they are able to voice creative ideas they may have for their programme,” says Naomi, Zeal West’s Pathways Coordinator. “I love watching our young people’s confidence grow and see their new friendships with others in our Zeal world.”

During the school term, the Zeal crew in West Auckland run a variety of creative programmes. As well as the photography and art mural classes, whose work was displayed in the Connect Exhibition, they also run dance, DJ and songwriting lessons.

Next term, our photography students have an incredible opportunity to exhibit at the acclaimed Te Uru Gallery in Titirangi.
