At Zeal, we believe every young person deserves a place where they can explore who they are, express themselves and feel they belong. That’s why we’ve created spaces across Aotearoa that have become the home of young creatives.
Throughout the year, rangatahi step into Zeal to try something new, whether that’s music, dance, visual art, photography, event production or more. Our programmes are free and accessible, opening the door for young people who might otherwise miss out.
What starts as curiosity often becomes something more. With the support of experienced tutors and youth workers, young people build confidence, develop skills and form strong, positive connections. They learn to back themselves, take creative risks and bring their ideas to life.
Our spaces are alive with creativity. Studios filled with music, rooms buzzing with movement, and stages where young people perform, often for the first time. Showcase events give rangatahi the chance to share their work with whānau and community, building pride and a real sense of achievement. Others step into behind-the-scenes roles, learning sound, lighting and event delivery.
Behind every programme is a young person finding their own path.
Nate first connected with Zeal through our Hangs space, coming in to play volleyball. About a year later, he joined one of our creative programmes, where he began learning musical technique and exploring how to bring his ideas to life.
Nate’s dad had been his idol, but he had passed away when Nate was young. While the influence of his dad was always there, Nate hadn’t yet fully understood what that meant for him.
When he joined the programme, he was asked to write a song. His first line was: “I don’t know what I’m singing and I don’t know what I’m doing.” It reflected more than just uncertainty in music.
With support from youth workers, Nate began to open up. Through that process, he came to a simple but powerful realisation: he wanted to make his dad proud.
That moment shifted something. Nate became more engaged, more motivated and more willing to try. His skills grew, but more importantly, so did his confidence and sense of direction.
Nate’s time with Zeal sparked a new positive chapter in his life – returning to his whenua to embrace more deeply his cultural identity, a choice made to strengthen belonging and a more connected future.
Stories like Nate’s are not uncommon. Every day, we see young people grow in confidence, find direction and discover what they’re capable of.
At Zeal, we continue to be inspired by the transformative difference creative programmes and communities make for young people finding confidence, connection and purpose.
Thank you to our supporters!
None of this happens alone. Zeal is proud to be the home of young creatives, made possible through the support of the wider Zeal whānau of funders and supporters who continue to invest in the potential of rangatahi across Aotearoa. You can view them here: Zeal Supporters Page
In particular, we would like to acknowledge Wright Family Foundation for their generous support. At a time when cost of living pressures are limiting access to creative opportunities, their investment is helping ensure Zeal’s programmes remain free, accessible and open to all rangatahi.
