Zeal’s West Tech club

Zeal in collaboration with Prospect Primary, teaches and empowers young people ages 8 and up, over 7 weeks to diagnose issues, disassemble and refurbish devices. Through these workshops, tutors and youth workers aim to tauoko young people into building confidence in their digital abilities and support them to step into tuakana positions.  To top it all off students are gifted their refurbished devices to help further their education and ongoing hauora hinengaro.

What goes down in Tech club

  • Tech club teaches the skills to thrive in the digital world, learn and earn online, make friends and overcome the tough stuff
  • It reduces tonnes of E-waste by diverting devices and parts. Extending the life of 1,000 devices by one year will have the equivalent environmental impact of taking 4 cars off the road for a year
  • It’s led by young people – we’ll support them to use their digital superpowers to achieve their goals, whether that’s building a gaming suite for their community or starting their own businesses one day
  • We run a low carbon footprint by sourcing donated devices and parts locally

Heres what rangatahi say about Zeal youth workers/ tutors

We estimate as many as 30% of families with young people attending school were without devices in our local area. For this reason, we hope to continue our mission and reach our goal of 1000 devices for 1000 young people"

We’re now working in 2 local West Auckland schools, alongside their teachers to make our tech clubs a good fit for their school communities, and built to last!

This project is proudly supported by The Trusts

Who's on the team?

Zeal has partnered with The Western Initiative, The Trusts and Local West Auckland schools to make a programme focused on a full digital ecosystem.

We’ve also got the amazing support of Community Waitakere to collect and store devices.
