Good cause café, Georgia, opens this Friday in Wellington and, alongside providing employment for youth, will serve 200 mouth-watering limited edition donuts each weekday for Wellington On A Plate.
Georgia is the second social enterprise cafe by youth organisation Zeal, launching after the success of Stories Espresso Bar, which has provided over 600 hours of first-time employment to high school age young people in 2015.
The latest shipping container pop-up takes its name from Stories first young employee, Georgia Hudson (18), who will work at the site.
“Working at Stories has been an amazing experience for me,” says Georgia. “It’s helped my confidence a huge amount. I think the idea to name a coffee shop after a young person is such a sweet idea, but I never thought it would be named after me!”
From Monday at Georgia, Wellington’s best bakers will craft 200 one-time-only donuts, each weekday, for Wellington On A Plate (14-30 August). Ten bakers are involved, including Leeds Street Bakery, Milk Crate & Café Nikau.
“I’ve just been playing with a salted caramel bacon idea this morning,” says Shepherd Elliot of Leeds St Bakery, who is one of the donut artisans. “Hopefully people come up with some quirky flavours. It’s a fun concept.”
Located at Volunteers Corner, on the corner of Dixon and Victoria Street, Georgia will open from 7.30am-3.30pm, Monday to Friday beginning on Friday 14 August and continuing as a pop-up for 4-6 weeks.
