That time we put Zeal Hawke’s Bay on the map in Sydney

Kia ora!

The month of October was an amazing month for Zeal Hawke’s Bay as we began to see our plans come to life, with momentum gaining around our programmes, activities and events. Here are just a few highlights!

The Amazing Race

During the school holidays, we saw close to 30 different teams enter and compete to be crowned the champions of The Amazing Race. The event was dreamed up, designed and ran by a team of young people in collaboration with the Napier Youth Council.

The race started at the iconic Soundshell on Marine Parade and took the teams across the Napier CBD, stopping at various local shops, clubs and reserves, where they had to perform a task before being able to move on to the next pit stop. Once all their tasks were completed, they raced back to the starting point to finish.

We competed at World Supremacy Battlegrounds

One of our dance crews (part of our Rezpect Dance Academy creative programme) got to go on an exciting trip to Sydney, Australia to compete at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds.

Seven young people aged 12-15 worked extremely hard to fundraise over $11,000 in just eight weeks to cover more than half of the cost of the trip. On top of this, they were training four times a week together to create their routine for competition. The amount of support the team had from their family, friends and local community was admirable to say the least!

The team came away with so many memories and valuable life lessons, like hard work, dedication, humility in learning and teamwork. They qualified in the Top 5 through to finals and we’re so proud of them!

Welcome Deb

We also welcomed our newest team member, Deborah Ho into her role as Centre Administrator and a Project Developer.

Deborah has been a breath of fresh air and she’s brought much-needed administrative capacity as well as new energy, passion and life to our team. Deborah will also work on the ground, face-to-face with young people at our after school hangs, summer events and school holiday pop ups throughout various communities in the Hawke’s Bay region.
