Zeal West champions creativity for Youth Week 2019

The Zeal West team have just wrapped up Youth Week 2019, where we helped coordinate 12 events in the Henderson Massey and Waitakere Ranges Local Board areas.

Youth Week is held every May in Aotearoa, aimed at valuing, supporting, and affirming the diversity of young people in our society. Every year, we place our own spin on the events, continuing to celebrate our young people through fostering creativity.

Amongst the 12 events we ran over Youth Week was our annual Versus Talent Quest.  Musicians, dancers, spoken word artists and more came together at our West Auckland venue to compete for over $1500 in cash prizes, which was taken out by Avondale College students.

We also had an amazing activation at Parrs Park on the Wednesday, which saw a 3 on 3 basketball competition, music, performances, and graffiti art. As part of NZ Music Month, we held a series of Acoustics Under the Stars events in The Falls carpark. Huge numbers from the community came out to support over 20 artists that performed over three Fridays throughout May.. This was our youth worker Rasela’s first event series, and definitely won’t be the last!

On Friday of Youth Week, students from our Gateway classes (Event Management, Sound, Health Promotion and Art Design) pulled together to execute a hugely successful concert celebrating Pink Shirt day (read more over on our blog post).

All in all, it was a huge week with a massive effort from all our staff.
